PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and apparatus for automatically classifying a node in a network, which functions as an autonomous component to form a distributed storage system without a central storage control unit, and allows the use of a further intelligent storage device. SOLUTION: The method comprises steps of detecting at least one data class; automatically classifying data stored on a node according to the data classes; detecting the amount of data classified according to data class, wherein the number of files and an average size of the files for each class are determined; calculating dominance values for each of the data classes from the detected amount of data, the dominance values being the measure for relative dominance values of stored data according to data class on nodes; receiving a request that indicates a data type according to the data class; and providing the dominance value that is the measure for relative dominance values of data according to the requested data class.
