A device and a method for detecting a foreign material from a flat scanning board in an image forming system are provided to enable a user to easily check a result of detecting foreign material and easily remove the foreign material by detecting the foreign material with an image sensor and informing the user of a correct position of the foreign material. A controller(20) sets a reference scanning time point for detecting the foreign material on the flat scanning board, and calculates a potential level of each pixel of a scanning image by scanning the flat scanning board with the image sensor in case of the set reference scanning time point. The controller detects presence of the foreign material by comparing the calculated potential value of each pixel with a reference potential value. The controller calculates the position information of the foreign material and moves the image sensor to the detected position according to the calculated position information in the case that the foreign material is on the flat scanning board.
