The engine has a composite casing of three cylinders (4, 9, 18) bolted together with a common crankshaft (2) running through them. The first and last cylinders (4, 18) contain rotary pistons (1, 15) and the central cylinder (9) contains a reciprocating piston (10) driven by a connecting rod (11) from the crankshaft. Air is admitted into the first cylinder and compressed. It passes into the central cylinder in which it receives a second stage of compression. Fuel is admitted in this cylinder and the first stage of expansion takes place in it. The partly expanded gases pass to the third cylinder in which the second stage of expansion takes place. The use of two stage compression and expansion enables high compression ratios to be obtained with a small stroke.
|
