PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a conveyor-chain replacement time detection device and a method which enable replacement of only a much worn part, corresponding to one pitch portion of a conveyor chain. SOLUTION: When a light-projecting and light-receiving unit 22 detects the rear end of one of adjoining dogs 11, a controller 20 simultaneously computes the amount of deviation from a reference position of the rear end of the other dog 11 by an amount-of-displacement measurement unit 23; and if that value exceeds the threshold, the controller outputs an operation signal to a spray gun 24. If the dog 11 comes to the front of the spray gun 24, paint is sprayed to the dog 11 from the spray gun 24, and a mark indicating the one pitch to be replaced is attached to the dog 11.
