An hydraulically operated metal extrusion press has two or more billet containers 10a, 10b mounted on a movable carrier 11, two or more die holders 18a, 18b mounted on a movable die carrier 19, cylinder means 28 for tightening the working container against the die holder during extrusion, means 62, Fig. 2 (not shown), for severing the extruded product from the discard, means 48 for pushing the discard out of the container and brushes 501 for cleaning the container bore, and means 52, 54 for charging the container with a fresh billet. The press is used for extruding ordinary or stainless steel into bars or tubes and in the latter case uses a mandrel 7 actuated by an hydraulic ram 9 in cylinder 8. The press stem 6 is actuated by main ram 3 and retracted by piston-rods 58, and the tightening cylinder 28 is movable in opposite directions by pistons 33, 34. Die carrier 19 is mounted on shaft 20 and rotated by an hydraulically operated rack 21 engaging pinion 22. Container carrier 11 is also rotated in bearings 14 by an hydraulically operated rack 16 engaging pinion 15, and is secured in its working position by hydraulically operated stops 40, engaging adjustable screws 45, Fig. 4 (not shown). To allow access for the rotary saw 62, Fig. 2 (not shown), the container is moved rearwardly relatively to its carrier 11 by hydraulic motors 60, 61, Fig. 2 (not shown). Discard ejector 48 is actuated by piston 46 and retracted by pistons 57; its cleaning brush 501 is rotated by motor 51. Fresh billets are supplied to a loader 52 and moved into the cylinder bore by a pusher 54 actuated by piston 53. The stem 6 and mandrel 7 are cooled before a fresh extrusion begins. In another embodiment, Figs. 8-13 (not shown), the container carrier and the die carrier are slidable transversely of the extrusion axis by hydraulic motors.
