A vehicle occupant restraint system in which the rear end of a curtain air bag is smoothly developed. The folded body of an air bag (1) is mounted along a roof side-rail (3) and can be inflated by an inflator (4). The rear end (1r) of the folded body of the slender air bag (1) is firstly folded one time to the front and upper sides, and the end of the folded portion thereof is folded again to the upper side and then to the rear side. Consequently, the rear end of the air bag (1) can be vertically folded in a total of three stages.
