The procedure uses a discharge valve (38) which is controlled by an pneumatic, hydraulic or electric actuator. This stands in the exhaust gas flow path, and acts such that the inlet pressure reference value is limited to a minimum value. The minimum value is made up of the sum of the surrounding pressure, and one or more pressure constants. The procedure allows determination of an inlet pressure reference value in an internal combustion engine, comprising an exhaust gas turbo-compressor which has a branch pipe extending parallel to the turbine, in the path of the exhaust gas. This includes a discharge valve (38) which is controlled by an pneumatic, hydraulic or electric actuator. This acts such that the inlet pressure reference value is limited to a minimum value. The minimum value is made up of the sum of the surrounding pressure, and one or more pressure constants. A base value which dependent on speed may also be added to the value derived from the surrounding pressure. When the gas valve is de-activated and the discharge valve is closed, a supplementary pressure constant is determined which is added to the surrounding pressure and base value. The supplementary pressure may be corrected by the adaptation as a function of the measured inlet pressure.
