<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device for reading a barcode, etc., reduced in size and cost. <P>SOLUTION: This binary code reading element has: a slip-shaped base; a light receiving area part which is formed on the slip-shaped base and in which a plurality of line segment-shaped photodetectors are arranged in a comb shape; and a detecting part for detecting a physical change value corresponding to the light receiving strength of each photodetector.
