PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the occurrence of a jam by accurately detecting the size in the width direction and the feed direction of recording paper. SOLUTION: A manual paper feed tray 52 is provided with a width size detecting sensor 74 for detecting the size in the width direction of the recording paper 48. A reflection type or actuator type feeding directional size determining sensor 76 is also arranged in a bottom part of the manual paper feed tray 52 for determining whether or not to be the size capable of carrying the recording paper 48. A path sensor 82 is arranged between a paper feed roller 54 and a preregister roller (a feed roller) 62 for detecting the length in the feed direction of the recording paper 48. A register part path sensor 82 is arranged between the preregister roller (the feed roller) 62 and a register roller 64. When the detected length in the feed direction of the recording paper 48 is shorter than an interval between the preregister roller 62 and the register roller 64, driving of motors 66, 68 and 70 is stopped.
