A surgical jig for application to a femur

A surgical jig for application to a femur at or adjacent a femoral head during hip replacement surgery on a hip defining an acetabulum, the jig comprising: jig location means adapted to mate with at least a first bone formation on the femur so as to locate the jig in a predefined relationship with the femur; and surgical tool guide means disposed relative to the jig location means such that, when the jig is mated with the bone formation, the surgical tool guide means is adapted to guide a surgical tool towards a predefined site on said femur, the jig location means being adapted to mate with the femur whilst the femoral head is disposed within the acetabulum.
