A method is disclosed for preparing a substrate for coating. The method uses a step of applying an acidic solution to the substrate to break down visible and non-visible layers of surface material. The method also uses a step of applying a treatment solution to decontaminate the substrate. The method further comprises a step of applying an aqueous rinsing solution to the substrate to remove neutralized ionic contaminants for the substrate.
