PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus in which transfer residual matter on an image carrier is removed by a cleaning blade, the image forming apparatus being designed, such that trapped matter, such as toner agglomeration and paper powder, on the cleaning blade can be easily removed, without causing image productivity to decrease a degree causing a practical problem, and removal of residual matter on the image carrier by the cleaning blade can be stabilized for a long time. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus A forms a toner image on the surface of the image carrier 1 rotated in the normal direction, transfers the toner image, formed on the surface of the image carrier 1, to a transfer body S, removes residual matter remaining on the surface of the image carrier 1, as a result of the transfer, by means of the cleaning blade 61 disposed in contact with the surface of the image carrier 1, and cleans the blade 61 by reversely rotating the image carrier 1. Whether rotation of the image carrier 1 is in the normal direction or direction reverse to it, the blade 61 is moved sidewise across the direction of movement of the surface of the image carrier. The amount of sidewise movement of the blade (or the speed of sidewise movement), when the image carrier is rotated in the reverse direction, is set larger than that when it is rotated in the normal direction.
