The method involves connecting two heating coils (20, 22) of a discharge lamp at quadrupoles (12, 14). Characteristics of inputs of the quadrupoles are selected in such a manner that a sufficient high voltage in the inputs decreases to provide a sufficient high input power for preheating the connected heating coils. The inputs of the quadrupoles are switched together with a double pole in rows parallel to a supply voltage. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a method for terminating the preheating of a heating coil of a discharge lamp (2) an arrangement for preheating a heating coil of a discharge lamp (3) a circuit arrangement for operating a discharge lamp with a set of heating coil.
