An image forming device and a method for recognizing a partition of an external memory connected to the same are provided to access all sub disks in a USB(Universal Serial Bus) storage device and display contents stored in all accessed sub disks to a tree structure UI(User Interface). A USB interface(10) connects the external memory(5) and the image forming device(100). A partition number calculator(30) calculates the number of partitions in the connected external memory. A display part(80) displays the calculated partitions. A controller recognizes each partition according to specific order and assigns a disk name to each recognized partition. A data structure organizer(50) organizes a structure of data stored in the partition by analyzing a specific area of the partition receiving the disk name.
