The invention describes a method for identifying modified versions of a foreign recombinant peptide, polypeptide or protein, expressed from a cloned gene, which are produced and maintained in a host cell at high levels and which are of reduced toxicity, such that genetic stability of the recombinant DNA is increased. This is achieved by a dual selection process whereby the modified protein is tested both (i) for its ability to accumulate and (ii) for its ability to cause reduced host stress.
