A velvet-like material comprising a synthetic textile material bonded to a rubber or thermoplastic material backing is made by preliminarily heat-treating the synthetic textile material, impregnating it with a composition of rubber or thermoplastic material, laminating the impregnated material to a rubber or thermoplastic material backing, and curing and/or bonding the composite material with the aid of heat, the preliminary heat-treatment being effected at a temperature not less than the curing or bonding temperature. The laminated material is napped on the side away from the backing, and the napped surface may, if desired, be sheared. The synthetic textile material may be polyamide or polyvinyl fibres in the form of a woven fabric or a fabric composed of a row of parallel threads crossed by thin weft threads. The thermoplastic impregnant or backing may be polyvinyl chloride. The fabric, after heat-treating is impregnated by passing through rubber solution, and spread with a thin layer of a rubber composition, before applying the rubber backing. Threads or fabrics, e.g. of metal, may be incorporated in the material as a reinforcement. The backing layer, or an additional intermediate layer, may consist of rubber or a thermoplastic material in spongy condition. The synthetic textile material may be dyed before or after laminating or napping.
