PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To automatically change a user interface related to replacement of an ink tank of an ink jet printer or opening and closing of an opening and closing cover according to a use environment of the ink jet printer, without requiring complicate operations. SOLUTION: Information related to the environment in which a user uses the printer is stored in an EEPROM 310 as a nonvolatile memory set together with the ink tank 2 of a recording head 1. According to the information related to the user's printer use environment stored in the EEPROM 310, the user interface of the ink jet printer executed when the user operates elements of the ink jet printer is changed over to a user interface suitable for the user's printer use environment. When it is possible to load a plurality of the ink tanks 2, the user interface is changed over to a user interface of the highest safety level according to the information of each EEPROM 310.
