<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the quality of translation by selecting an appropriate translation method according to the kinds of documents. <P>SOLUTION: In this translation processing method, first, kinds of documents and characteristic information of the document are associated and registered. Specifically, a sample document is scanned, the characteristic information of the document is extracted and then associated with a document type and stored in a table Tc. Further, the document type and the translation method are associated and registered in a table Tr. After registering of the characteristic information is performed, character information is extracted from the document of the translation target, and the characteristic information of the document is extracted. By referring to the table Tc, the extracted character information and the characteristic information registered in the table Tr are compared, and thereby, the document type of the document is determined. Further, by referring to the table Tr, based on the determined document type, the translation method is determined.
