888,602. Nuclear reactors. U N I T E D KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. July 1, 1958 [July 1, 1957], No. 20780/57. Class 39(4) A graphite moderator structure comprises interlocking layers of blocks of rectangular cross-section with coolant channels perpendicular to the layers. The blocks are alternately of large (11) and small (12) cross-section and are spaced apart at the sides. The larger blocks have grooves along the edges to locate with large blocks in adjacent rows. In a diagonal line drawn through a series of such interlocking blocks in a layer the direction of minimum Wigner growth is in the plane of a layer and, in alternate blocks, along or perpendicular to the line; in the smaller blocks the direction is parallel to the coolant channels. The layers are staggered so that forces holding them together can be applied through the surfaces 21 of the smaller blocks. The blocks have circular spigots 23 for interlocking. The structure can be a vertical cylinder with radial and end restraints. |
