The method involves establishing the deviation in set value-/actual value of the operating parameters of the exhaust gas recirculation system. In case the established deviation of the set value of the operating parameter is changed, the resulting change establishes at least one operating variable of at least two functional components. The established change, in at least one operating parameter of at least two functional components, closes the malfunction which may possibly exist in at least one of the two functional component of the exhaust gas recirculation system. An independent claim is also included for the device for functional diagnosis of two functional components of an exhaust gas recirculation system of exhaust gas recirculation internal combustion engine.
