An annular inertia member 12, made, e.g. of cast iron or die cast zinc, is rotatably supported substantially concentrically within the fluid chamber 15 of a viscous torsional vibration damper by means of a ring of ball-bearings 13. which are made of a plastics material and which fit snugly into opposed grooves. 35, 36, respectively in the inertia member 12 and a housing 11, a uniformly thin shear film of damping fluid being maintained between the inertia member and the housing. The bearings, preferably made of nylon, may be spaced by steel balls 13, Fig. 3, which are of a smaller diameter than the bearings 13 so that they carry no load, or by means of nylon rod members 37, Fig. 5. The housing 11 comprises a pair of light-weight, die or plaster cast, complementary sections- 19, 20 made, e.g. of aluminium or zinc, the mutually engaging surfaces of the sections, which require no machining, being permanently cemented together preferably by means of an, epoxy type cement sealer.
