A compound (II) is reacted with a formic acid ester in the presence of an alkali metal alkoxide or the like to form a compound (III); the compound (III) is reacted with a compound (IVa) or (IVb) to form a compound (V); the compound (V) is reacted with a compound (VI) to form a compound (VII); and then the compound (VII) is deblocked to form a compound (I). The invention provides an industrially advantageous process for the production of 4-acetylpyrimidines useful in the synthesis of drugs as intermediate. (wherein X is methylthio or the like; R<SUP>1</SUP> is lower alkyl or the like; R<SUP>2</SUP> is optionally substituted lower alkyl or the like; M is alkali metal; and X<SUP>1</SUP> is halogeno).
