[Also in Division B5] A filter element for separating solids from liquids, or gases, comprises filter-cloth 12, Fig. 4b, made of e.g. metal or plastic threads, which is reinforced on one, or both, of its faces by metal-wire mesh 11 having a coating of plastics material, the element being made preferably by heating the mesh, coating it with the material and applying it to the cloth before it is cooled, whereby the cloth and the mesh are bonded to one another. A plurality of such filter elements, each having a supporting frame 13, Fig. 4, may be linked to form a rotatable band-like screen 1, Fig. 1, through which water to be filtered flows inwardly, solid material collected by the screen being washed therefrom by a water-spray 2 and collected in a box 3. Alternatively, the filter elements may be arranged to form a rotatable drum, Fig. 2 (not shown), through which water to be filtered flows outwardly, solid material being washed from the screen by a water-spray into a box lodged within the drum. A single filter-element may form a stationary or rotatable screen 10, Fig. 3, of circular configuration from which solid material is washed by a stream of water Z and deposited in a stationary or rotatable box 4 at the end of a suction-pipe 5. Fluid to be filtered flows upwardly through the screen and if the screen is stationary the box 4 is rotated by a driving shaft through bevel gearing, the box being fixed if the screen is rotatable. |
