PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compact and high-variable-power zoom lens suitable for a digital camera or the like, having high image quality. SOLUTION: The zoom lens is equipped with a 1st lens group I having positive refractive power, a 2nd lens group II having negative refractive power, a 3rd lens group III having positive refractive power, a 4th lens group IV having positive refractive power, and a 5th lens group V comprising a doublet having positive or negative refractive power, and the zoom lens performs zooming from a wide-angle end to a telephoto end, by moving the 2nd lens group from an object side to an image surface side while fixing the 1st lens group, corrects aberrations due to the zooming by moving the 3rd lens group, the 4th lens group and the 5th lens group, and performs focusing by moving the 4th lens group, wherein the zoom lens is formed so that the focal distance (ft) at the telephoto end in a lens system to an image forming surface from the front surface of the 1st lens group and the entire length TL of the lens system satisfy the relation TL/ft<1.4.
