In a flat pack primary cell comprising, within a closed casing 12 having at opposed ends apertures through which terminal plates 14, 54 are accessible, a plurality of anodes 18, 20, 22 of Mg or Mg alloy, a plurality of electronically insulating ionically conductive separators 56, 58, 60 disposed between and covering adjacent faces of anodes, a plurality of cathode electrodes 30, 32, 34, usually C rods, a cathode mix 46, 48, 50, disposed between adjacent faces of anodes and cathode electrodes but separated therefrom by separators 56, 58, 60, made, e.g. of blotting paper, and means 36, 38, 40 and 42, 44, for electrically connecting together the cathodes and anodes respectively, the anodes are in sheet-like form and folded to form a structure having U-shaped transverse crosssectional configuration, and each anode has a sheet of compressible material 24, 26, 28 disposed between the folds thereof, the sheets usually being as thick as the spacing between the folds. The sheets 24, 26, 28 are made of cellular material, preferably expanded polystyrene or P.V.C. and may contain moisture to replenish moisture in the cathode mix, which is usually a mixture of MnO 2 and C black moulded into a cake after being moistened with an electrolyte which is preferably an aqueous solution of an alkali or alkaline earth metal bromide or ammonium bromide, preferably together with alkali metal, alkaline earth metal or ammonium salt of chromic acid. |
