PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a means for easily visually confirming and easily taking out a document delivered from a paper delivery port, by surely discriminating the document size. SOLUTION: This automatic document feeder ADF 1 has a carrying passage 3 formed in a paper delivery tray 4 from a document tray 2, a regist roller 7a for nipping and carrying the document by rotating after correcting a skew by abutting on a roller surface for resting the tip of the document delivered in the carrying passage 3 from the document tray 2, a carrier roller 7 properly arranged in the carrying passage 3 on the downstream side of the regist roller 7a and nipping and carrying the document by synchronously rotating with the regist roller 7a, a CCD reading unit 12 for reading the carried document, a paper delivery roller 9 for delivering the document after reading to the paper delivery tray 4, and a document length sensor 34 for detecting the existence of the document in a detecting position of the carrying passage 3. The document length sensor 34 detects the existence of the document in the detecting position when the regist roller 7a rotates by the predetermined number for nipping and carrying the document.
