<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a communication system in which a preferential user frame is prevented from being discarded unnecessarily. <P>SOLUTION: In the communication system, when a first maintenance frame transmission event occurs during transmission of a user frame, an executing section of a media converter (12) interrupts transmission of the user frame and transmits the first maintenance frame to a media converter (15) on the opposite side. Consequently, the user frame under transmission is discarded partially or entirely when the first maintenance frame is transmitted. Upon occurrence of a second maintenance frame transmission event during transmission of the user frame, the executing section of the media converter (12) waits for a maintenance frame insertion space after transmission of the user frame and then transmits the second maintenance frame to the media converter (15) on the opposite side. Consequently, a preferential user frame is not discarded when the second maintenance frame is transmitted.
