1,200,370. Supporting honeycombs during machining. HEXCEL CORP. 11 Sept., 1967 [12 Sept., 1966], No. 41443/67. Headings B3B and B3K. A method of clamping an expanded honeycomb core 10 comprises securing the core and pads 12-12<SP>111</SP> in a frozen liquid and applying a clamping force to the pads. (Previous methods consisted in the use of water-soluble waxes to support the honeycomb; spraying the honeycomb with water which is subsequently frozen to support it and secure it to a base-plate; and freezing the honeycomb in a block of ice and clamping the block.) The core is mounted in water in a doublewalled tray 6, 8, Fig. 1, cooled by brine 15. It is engaged by pressure pads 12-12<SP>111</SP> joined by clamps 14, 14<SP>1</SP>. The water is frozen and the solidified block removed. The block is then clamped by means 16, Fig. 3, and supported by rollers 18. The core is milled by cutters 20. |
