<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To vary the display range of the effective display area of an ophthalmic image. <P>SOLUTION: On a monitor 28, an area of a diameter D0 obtained by covering the peripheral part of an eye fundus image Er' with a mask M is displayed. When a display area expanding means is operated in the case of finding a section which seems to be abnormal in the vicinity of the boundary between the mask M and the eye fundus image Er' during image reading, the opening part of the mask M is expanded to expand the display area of the eye fundus image Er'.
