1276639 Collapsible steering columns GENERAL MOTORS-HOLDEN'S PTY Ltd 19 April 1971 [23 Feb 1970] 22617/71 Heading B7H In an axially adjustable shaft, particularly for use as a collapsible steering column, having telescopically interfitting inner and outer shafts, 3 and 2, longitudinal ribs or edges 4 formed over part of the length of one of the shafts have a predetermined interference fit with complementary grooves 8 in the other shaft, the cross-section of the shafts being such that the zones between the ribs and grooves do not engage. The shaft, which may be restored to its original length after collapse, is formed by forcing, for example, the inner shaft 3 into the outer shaft so as to form the appropriate grooves. The grooves are formed over the length corresponding to the full axial displacement required. |
