1277193 Detection of chemical contaminants WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP 11 April 1967 [13 April 1966] 16649/67 Heading B1X [Also in Division G1] A flat laminated device for detecting chemical contaminants comprises a base sheet 12 formed with at least one recess 22 holding a sorptive pad 34, at least one pocket 18 holding a rupturable bag 46 which contains a fluid reagent, and a channel 50 extending from the pocket to the recess; a transparent retainer sheet 14 with at least one opening 54 is attached to the base sheet 12, and a removable cover sheet 16 seals the opening 54. The base and retainer sheets may be made of a polymer of monochlorotrifluoroethylene or tetrafluoroethylene, and the cover sheet of aluminium foil. For the detection of a nerve agent, the pad 34 is impregnated with horse or bovine cholinesterase, bovine serum albumin, and a buffer; the pad is moistened with water by rupturing bag 46 and then contacted, by folding the device about line 62, with pad 38 which is impregnated with indoxyl acetate and a mixture of sodium and potassium ferro- and ferricyanides. The absence of a coloration indicates the presence of a nerve agent. Another pad impregnated with 4-nitrobenzyl pyridine and mercuric cyanide and moistened with NaOH solution is used to test for mustard agent. In a modified device, Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown) for use in testing water, the water container is omitted, but heat is supplied to the mustard agent testing pad by reaction between aluminium metal and CuCl 2 solution. The device of Figs. 6-8 (not shown) incorporates additional fritted glass pads marked with test crayons for contacting with further pads for detecting arsenic compounds, cyanide, and phosgene. The device may also be used to test industrial gasses for sulphur compounds and carbon monoxide.
