PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To diagnose a failure of a combustion improvement means even if combustion in a combustion chamber is deteriorated to an extent of causing no accidental fire. SOLUTION: This device is provided with an ignition means 10 and a combustion improvement means 53. A period N between a period M relating to generation of regular torque when the combustion improvement means is under one condition and period relating to generation of regular torque when the combustion improvement means is under another condition is defined as reference period R. If the period relating to generation of regular torque which should be shorter than the reference period when the combustion improvement means normally functions is longer than the reference period or if the period relating to generation of regular torque which should be longer than the reference period when the combustion improvement means normally functions is shorter than the reference period, the device determines that the combustion improvement means fails.
