The processing machine has chain conveyors (8,9) with gripper bars (11,12) for holding leading and trailing edges (4.1,4.2) of printing sheet (4). A sheet smoother (14) processes the sheet conveyed by the chain conveyors. A length changing device comprising circulation paths of different length, changes gripper distance between the gripper bars, to produce sag (29) required during processing of the sheet by sheet smoothing device.
