Seeds of corn and/or corn plants grown from corn seeds are treated with effective amount of at least one chitooligosaccharide represented by formula:wherein Rdenotes hydrogen or methyl; Rdenotes hydrogen or methyl; Rdenotes hydrogen, acetyl or carbamoyl; Rdenotes hydrogen, acetyl or carbamoyl; Rdenotes hydrogen, acetyl or carbamoyl; Rmeans hydrogen, arabinozil, fucosyl, acetyl, sulphate, 3-O-S-2-O-MeFuc, 2-O-MeFuc and 4-O-AcFuc; Rmeans hydrogen, mannozil or glycerine; Rdenotes hydrogen, methyl or-CHOH; Ris hydrogen, arabinozil or fucosyl; Rdenotes hydrogen, acetyl or fucosyl; and n equals to 0, 1, 2 or 3.
