A bracket assembly for adjustably mounting a head rail in spaced relationship to a wall or ceiling. The assembly includes a stationary base member (3,3A,3B,3C) for mounting to a wall or ceiling surface, the base member comprising an elongated support leg (7, 7A,7B,7C) and the support leg (7,7A,7B,7C) having an elongated slot (13,13A,13B,13C) comprised therein, the elongated slot comprising at least opposite first and second inner wall surfaces (19, 21, 19A, 21A, 19B, 21B, 19C; 21C). The assembly also includes a head rail holder (33,33A,33B,33C) for carrying a head rail, the head rail holder being slidably mounted to the support leg (7,7A,7B,7C) by a stemmed fastener (41,41A,41B,41C) projecting through the slot (13,13A,13B,13C) of the support leg (7, 7A,7B,7C) such that the head rail holder is slidable in first and second directions along the support leg, clamping means (39,39A,39B,39C) engageable with the support leg (7,7A,7B,7C) for releasably retaining the head rail holder (33,33A,33B,33C) in different adjusted positions along the support leg and actuating means (31,31A,31B,31C) for releasing or engaging the clamping means. The clamping means (39,39A,39B,39C) and the actuating means (31,31A,31B,31C) are mounted to the support leg (7,7A,7B,7C) by the stemmed fastener and the actuating means is operatively connected to the clamping means by the fastener (41, 41A, 41B, 41C) allowing linear movement relative to the clamping means for releasing or engaging the clamping means.
