A direct-fired steam generator body (12) defines a combustion chamber (28) and having an exhaust outlet (18). A mixing chamber (32) is provided for receiving the exhaust gases from the combustion chamber (28). A flange joint between an elbow forming part of the mixing chamber (32) and the end of the steam generator body (12) defining the exhaust outlet (18) is designed so as to be cooled by process water coupled to the joint by an injection port (40) provided in one of the flanges (34,36).
