PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve display quality by retaining a sufficient pixel capacitance in an in-plane switching type liquid crystal display device using an active matrix mode. SOLUTION: A liquid crystal is interposed between a pair of substrates. A first electrode group, a second electrode group intersecting the first electrode group via an insulating layer, a switching element connected on an end to the second electrode group, and a pixel electrode opposing the first electrode group and connected to the other end of the switching element are formed on one of the substrates. Thereby the pixel electrode is placed opposite to the first electrode group. By energizing the first electrode group and the pixel electrode, a lateral electric field is generated in a direction substantially parallel to the substrate surface and alignment of the liquid crystal is controlled. At least a part of the first electrode group and at least a part of the pixel electrode are placed opposite to each other in the substrate or in the insulating layer, and a pixel capacitance is formed at a part where the electrodes are placed opposite to each other, and the display quality is improved.
