PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high density recording type magnetic tape whose durability in long time running is enhanced. SOLUTION: The magnetic recording medium has a magnetic layer 2 on one principal surface of a non-magnetic substrate 1 and a reinforcement layer 3 composed of a material selected from a metal, a semi-metal, an alloy thereof, an oxide thereof and a composite thereof and formed on the other principal surface of the magnetic layer 2. The surface of the reinforcement layer 3 is subjected to surface treatment by irradiation with ions and a back coat layer is formed on the reinforcement layer 3 by a wet coating technique.
