<p>The application discloses a hardness tester probe for determining the hardness of a test material, the probe comprising: i) a stylus (4) for contacting a test surface; ii) a bar (3) attached to the stylus; iii) excitation means (1) attached to the bar, the excitation means being capable of causing the bar to vibrate; and iv) detection means for detecting the phase and/or amplitude of the vibrations of the bar; wherein means are provided to measure the phase and/or amplitude of the vibrations of the bar and comparison means are provided to compare the phase and/or amplitude of the vibrations when touching a test surface, compared with the bar when the probe is not touching a test surface. The probe may be arranged so that the angle of the bar to the test material is less than 90° to the surface of the test material.</p> |
