PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for easily searching a catalyst which substitutes a particular catalyst. SOLUTION: The method comprises evaluating an alternative candidate based on the value of the formula:ΔE1=¾E1-E1s¾, andΔE2=¾E2-E2s¾, in an area of which energy difference is smaller than +10eV when the value that reduces the energy of electron of a metal or an intermetallic compound from the Fermi energy of the metal or the intermetallic compound is defined as the energy difference, provided that the value in which the energy difference among the electrons of the catalyst of the alternative source becomes minimum is designated as E1, the value in which the energy difference among the electrons of the catalyst becomes maximum is designated as E2, the value in which the energy difference among the electrons of the alternative candidates of the catalyst becomes minimum is designated as E1s and the value in which the energy difference among the electrons of the alternative candidates of the catalyst becomes maximum is designated as E2s.
