PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a fixing device in which an abnormal increase in the temperature of a heating roll is prevented and which is made small-sized and attains high speed, and to provide an image forming apparatus which uses the fixing device. SOLUTION: The fixing device includes a first heat source 54a and a second heat source 54b, a first temperature detection sensor S1 disposed in the minimum paper passage area Rc of a heat member 54, and a second temperature detection sensor S2 disposed in either one of end areas Re. The first heat source 54a applies the maximum amount of heat to the end area Re, meanwhile the second heat source 54b applies the maximum amount of heat to an intermediate area Rm between the end areas Re. The fixing device is provided with a temperature increase prevention means which controls the supply of power to the first and second heat sources 54a and 54b based upon the detection results of the first and second temperature detection sensors S1 and S2 and the size of a recording material, and which prevents the temperature of the heat member 51 corresponding to a paper non-passage area from exceeding a predetermined temperature.
