In a method of carbonizing coal in a coke oven a mixture of steam and oil is injected through one or more atomizing nozzles 22 into the free space between the charge in the oven and a secondary crown 18, the secondary crown being of a refractory material in which a catalyst, e.g. a fireclay, is incorporated. The secondary crown has orifices 20 in alignment with the charging holes 13 and is preferably built up of chequer brickwork.
