A device 11 for removing distillate from a fractionating column 12 comprises a freely <PICT:0850906/III/1> movable ball valve 8 consisting of glass filled with permanently magnetic material and whose movements are so controlled by an annular electro-magnet 9 encircling the device that distillate can be removed intermittently by a tube 7. A thermometer 10, or thermocouple, inserted through a reflux condenser 2 measures the temperature above the distillate take-off point. In the Figure the device is shown built into the head of column 12; alternatively the device may be constructed as an independent part to fit on top of the column. In both embodiments the column may be charged with filling material right up to the distillation take-off point. |
