<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus such as a printer, a copying machine or an ink jet printer which performs control by automatically selecting an image forming condition in accordance with a medium by a medium detection sensor and which is prevented from causing an image defect or the like even when the medium detection sensor breaks down because of disconnection or short-circuit. <P>SOLUTION: When the characteristic value S of a medium detected by the medium detection sensor is in relation of S>Smax or S<Smin to detection upper limit value Smax and lower limit value Smin set previously, it is judged that the medium detection sensor breaks down and an image is formed in a control mode for breakdown time set previously.
