PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for obtaining a high purity aromatic dihydroxy compound by inexpensively treating a large amount of waste aromatic polycarbonates (for example, aromatic polycarbonate products such as disused CD (compact disc), CD-ROM (CD-read-only memory), and DVD (digital video disc)). SOLUTION: The method for obtaining the aromatic dihydroxy compound (for example, bisphenol A) by dissolving waste aromatic polycarbonate resins in an organic solvent and decomposing these polycarbonate resins in the organic solvent solution under alkaline conditions comprises filtering the organic solvent solution of the aromatic polycarbonate resins and using the filtrate in the decomposition reaction.
