Hardening of a workpiece by high-frequency induction heating in a liquid bath comprises: (a) positioning of the workpiece in the bath; (b) positioning of a hardening head in the bath; and (c) arrangement of the areas to be hardened relative to the hardening head so that they are subjected to induction hardening, and a hardened pattern with a series of essentially separate hardened regions is produced. Also claimed is an appts. for partial hardening of a workpiece. The appts. includes a container (12 ) for the liquid bath, a hardening head (23), a position sensor (33) for establishing the relative position of the hardening head and the surface to be hardened, a positioning system for relative positioning of the hardening head and the workpiece surface to be hardened, and means for supplying the hardening head with energy.
