The tobacco line (2) consisting of a multitude of fibers is guided by a suction belt (4) through a trimming device (8a, 32) cutting off surplus material (22) from the lower side of the line (2). A sliding element (10) is positioned in a fixed distance to the trimming disk (8a) in order to guide the material (2) through the particular area. The element (10) has a convex lower surface (10a, 10b, 10c) coated with ceramics or hard metal for a perfect shaping of the line (2) and is provided with openings (10d) serving as suction ducts.
