A method for authentication of a transaction by a data processing apparatus with an entity comprises the steps of generating transaction data; retrieving authentication data stored on an associated storage means, the storage being registered with a common system; and a transaction manager, wherein the transaction data and authentication data are transmitted to the common system via the transaction manager. Preferably the system is a telecommunications system such as a mobile or cellular network. The authentication storage means be a smartcard or SIM and may also be used to authenticate the terminal in the telecommunications system. The authentication means may be removably coupled to a carrier such as a dongle. The carrier may be wirelessly linked to the data processing apparatus. The carrier may also have a display and data entry means, such as keypad, for the entry of a PIN. The carrier device may also include a data processing module for use in encrypting and decrypting data transmitted between the storage means and the data processing apparatus. |
