The engine has at least one outlet valve per engine cylinder. It also has an exhaust gas turbo charger (3) whose turbine (5) is associated with an exhaust gas passage (8) and whose compressor (6) is associated with an intake passage (9) of the engine. A turbine (4) is driven by the engine exhaust gas and is coupled to a gear of the engine. This is connected after the exhaust gas turbine. A bypass line (15) bypasses the turbine (4) and a bypass unit (16) in the line is connected to the turbine (4) via an exhaust gas line. The bypass unit is in the form of a combined switch and throttle valve so that the exhaust line can be fully closed and the bypass line can be fully or partially closed.
