<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a development unit that surely prevents contacting with a latent image carrier, when the development unit is attached or detached, and to provide an image forming apparatus having the development unit. <P>SOLUTION: A rib-like rail 140 is formed on the bottom of the development unit attached freely detachably to the image forming apparatus. A guide for guiding the rail 140 projects from the body frame of the image forming apparatus. The rail 140 includes a plurality of linear parts and distances between them, and a developing roller becomes wider, as they extend from an insertion area 141 toward the terminating edge of the insertion of the development unit.
